In March of 2018, an elder who took blood pressure medication was repeatedly placed in restraints, locked in a seclusion room, and forcibly drugged with major tranquilizers and sedatives by mental health workers at the Brattleboro Retreat. After being held in a seclusion room for at least 23 hours, the patient had a cardiac emergency due to an interaction between major tranquilizers and blood pressure meds. After returning to the Retreat from the emergency department of a neighboring hospital, the patient was again forcibly drugged and put in seclusion and restraint.
